What playground safety standards should be considered during planning, and how should the budget be estimated?
Today, we’d like to talk about what to watch out for when planning playground equipment and how to roughly estimate the budget. We work with clients from many different fields who approach us to purchase playground equipment. One of the most common requests we hear is the desire to maximize space usage—filling every possible area with equipment.
However, when it comes to playgrounds, safety is a top priority in Taiwan, and there are many well-established regulations. The most commonly referenced standard is CNS 12642.
If you’re considering doing an initial layout yourself, the first and most important thing to consider is safety clearance. Under CNS 12642, the safety zone generally extends 183 cm outward from the edge of the equipment—similar to what you might see in typical reference images. Below are some key safety rules and our practical recommendations:
Key Safety Guidelines
1. General fixed equipment safety zone:
Extend 183 cm outward from the equipment edge.
- If both structures are under 76 cm in height, safety zones may overlap.
- If either structure exceeds 76 cm, the minimum distance between them must be 274 cm.
2. Swing safety zone:
Measured from the center of the swing.
The front and back clearance must each equal twice the swing height.
- Example: Swing height 180 cm → 360 cm front + 360 cm back.
3. Trampoline safety zone:
Extend 213 cm outward from the jumping surface.
4. Mandatory requirements:
All playgrounds must include impact-attenuating surfacing and safety signage in accordance with regulations.
These are the top priorities to keep in mind when doing preliminary planning. Of course, there are many additional detailed requirements—but those can be professionally handled by Starlight Tai, so you don’t have to worry.
How Should the Budget Be Estimated?
Pricing in many industries—especially playgrounds—can vary widely depending on materials, structural strength, durability, and design aesthetics. When we develop each piece of equipment, we go beyond simply meeting minimum safety standards. We place strong emphasis on structural integrity and long-term safety, which is an area we continuously invest in and improve.
As long as you have a need, Starlight Tai aims to help you find the most suitable solution. That said, we strongly recommend setting aside a dedicated portion of the budget for safety surfacing and signage. These elements are not only regulatory requirements—they are essential protections for users and peace of mind for everyone involved.
